Patrick Beery’s artwork lives in the dark, bloody, whiskey soaked world of the Wild West. It lurks in purgatory, between life and death, the struggle between the good, bad, and the ugly.
He grew up spray painting the trains rolling down the train line, Holsters of spray-paint strapped to his hip and a cowboy hat atop his head. Graffiti is all about flowing with lines and all his life he has been walking that thin line. This is why all of his artwork deals with intricate line work. His art takes its character from the lines of a branch, the bark of a twisted pine and the jagged formations of the Red Rocks. His current series starts entirely in black and takes shape as it gets progressively lighter and lighter as the line work is applied. The result is an intensely highly contrasted image reflecting the work of Caravaggio. This way of working stemmed from his performance painting. This aspect of his work is completed at concerts where every stroke corresponds to the beat of the music. The drawings are completed very rapidly, 15-30 min, (fastest draw in the west) and to work faster it helps to work on black, going over it with lighter lines and only working in highlights. He brings the paintings darkness into the light.
Patrick currently lives in denver Colorado and continues to create. He has attended Denver School of the Arts, Rocky Mountain College of Art+Design, and Metrto State.
